The ever-increasing budget restrictions must have been taken under consideration
during the planning of future productions. Progressively, film writers have begun to
place the action on remote islands, which conveniently eliminated the need for
expensive sets and scale models. The most obvious example of such practices is Son of
Godzilla
.
On an isolated from the rest of the world island, a group of scientists prepares a
meteorological experiment. However, something goes wrong when instead of a synthetic
snowfall, a hot, radioactive rain starts pouring down. We don’t have to wait long for
the results. Shortly, huge mutant insects (Kamacuras) begin to bug out scientists.
And if that weren’t enough, Godzilla arrives on the island. It’s goal is to protect
a gigantic egg which makes for a tasty appetizer for Kamacuras. A little Godzilla
(Minya) hatches from the egg. After several family-cinema scenes, where daddy
teaches his son some martial arts movements and lays down the rudimentary values,
it’s time to take care of the insects. But that’s not all, folks. A giant spider
Kumonga lurks on the island, and he doesn’t fool around. Minya undergoes his
baptism of fire saving his dad from some real trouble. In the mean time, the
hapless scientists rehabilitate their name. A huge snow storm invades the island. In
the last scene, our favorite family enters hibernation and the snowflakes keep
falling and falling...
Little Minya was an idea of Sadamsa Arikawa—a new special effects master. Its
character became the cause of controversy and disputes among Godzilla’s fans. Some
claim that this idea is a complete misfire. But one thing is certain: in the future,
the filmmakers won’t find a formula to further explore the little Minya and, eventually,
he will appear only in a minor role in Destroy All Monsters
and the retrospective film
Godzilla’s Revenge.
Once again, the movie was directed by Jun Fukuda.
Here’s how Ishiro Honda comments on his absence: “Frankly, I was having a hard time
humanizing Godzilla, at least the way Toho expected me to do it. It certainly would
have been difficult for me to direct Son of Godzilla.”
